He was rescued accidentally by a passenger ship, which later is raid by the Alvida Pirates. There he encountered Coby, who serves not only Luffy’s friend but his enemy as well in the remaining series.
They went to find Roronoa Zoro, a bounty hunter. Luffy stated that if Zoro was a good guy he might have him join his crew. It proved that Zoro was a good guy and he became the first Nakama of Luffy’s.1-2. Orange Town Arc (Anime Episodes 4-8, Manga Chapters 8-21)At the start, this mimi arc tells us the relevance between Luffy and Shanks.
One Piece 12: Clash With the Black Cat Pirates! The Great Battle On the Slope! One Piece 29: The Conclusion of the Deadly Battle! A Spear of Blind.
10 years ago, Luffy was influenced by Shanks and became interested in setting out onto the sea as a pirate. Time switch to now, he encounters Buggy who along with Shanks served as the apprentices of the Roger Pirates when they were young.
Both of them are devil fruit users, and they have a battle with the result that Luffy defeats Buggy, which causes Buggy taking a grudge against Luffy in the remaining series. At last, Nami agrees to travel with Luffy and Zoro as a navigator but just for collaboration not for companion.1-3. Syrup Village Arc (Anime Episodes 9-18, Manga Chapters 22-41)Syrup Village is where the forth member of the Straw Hats, Usopp comes from. There happens a battle between the Straw Hats and the Black Cat Pirates. The captain of the Black Cat Pirates, Kuro, is an extremely intelligent and cunning man.
He attempted to encroach on the property of Kaya’s family. After difficult battles, the Straw Hats defeat the Black Cat Pirates and rescue the village and Kaya from their menace. When the Straw Hats leave the Syrup Village, Usopp joins them and becomes the forth member.1-4. Baratie Arc (Anime Episodes 19-30, Manga Chapters 42-68)Baratie is an ocean-going restaurant, which was set up by Zeff and Sanji. This arc tells us the past of Zeff and Sanji. We know that Sanji owes a debt to Zeff for him being rescued by Zeff from the ocean.
Zeff and Sanji hold the same dream that the “All Blue” exists. The Straw Hats go to the restaurant for finding a cook and encountered Sanji. At the same time, the Don Krieg Pirates attack the restaurant. Luffy along with the cooks defeat the pirates. What’s worth noting is that Zoro encounters Dracule Mihawk, the strongest swordsman in the world and Zoro’s target as well. Zoro fights Mihawk, while defeated easily by Mihawk. There exists a great gap between their strength.
At last, Sanji joins the Straw Hats and became the fifth crew.1-5. Arlong Park Arc (Anime Episodes 31-45, Manga Chapters 69-95)This arc tells us Nami’s miserable past. When Nami was a baby, her hometown was ruined by the pirates. The female marine Bellemere adopted her. When she was 7 years old, Cocoyashi Village was attacked and dominated by the Arlong Pirates. Even more, her fostress Bellemere was killed by Arlong.
It became a painful memory that she had to join the Arlong Pirates and earned money to buy Cocoyashi Village from the Arlong Pirates, which had lasted 10 years. The Straw Hats defeat the Arlong Pirates and Luffy destroy the Arlong Park, rescuing the village from the domination of the pirates. It cheers us greatly. As a result of this victory, Luffy is first wanted by the marines with a bounty of 30 million berries, which is the highest bounty in all of East Blue.1-6. Buggy Side Story (Anime Episodes 46-47, Manga Chapters covers 35-75)Though this part contains only two episodes, it is very interesting.
In the Orange Town Arc, Buggy was defeated by Luffy and sent flying to another island with several body parts missing. He had become little Buggy. As he was so little, it was difficult for him to fight an ostrich. On the other side, his crew assumed he was dead and fought over who will be the new captain. At last, they reunited and began their journey to find Mugiwara Luffy.
It is so interesting! Believe me you can’t stop laughing.1-7. Loguetown Arc (Anime Episodes 48-53, Manga Chapters 96-100)Loguetown is the place where the former Pirate King Gol D.
Roger was born, and also the place where he died. This town is also called “The town of the beginning and the end”. The Straw Hats debark the island and a lot of interesting things come.
Luffy wants to go to the execution platform and encounter Smoker, who will become his important enemy later. Zoro encounters Tashigi, a Master Chief Petty Officer who looks like his friend in his childhood.
What’s more, Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon, makes his debut, though his real identity is not revealed.1-8. Warship Island Arc (Anime Episodes 54-61, Non-Canon)This part is Non-Canon therefore not based on One Piece manga.
It is the first filler arc of the series. The story happens before Straw Hats enter the Grand Line. They find a young girl named Apis escaping from Marine Branch 8. The marine commander wants to find dragons’ bone, which is thought as medicine that would make human immortal.
The little girl Apis is the clue to find dragons. The Straw Hats return Apis back to Warship Island and clash with Marine Branch 8. They defeat the marines and help Apis find the dragon’s hometown.
Alabasta Saga2-1. Reverse Mountain Arc (Anime Episodes 62-63, Manga Chapters 101-105)Reverse Mountain is one of the two entrances to the Grand Line(another is travelling across the calm belt). There are five rivers on the Reverse Mountain, four flowing up to the top from the four seas(east blue, south blue, north blue, and west blue), another flowing down from the top into the Grand Line. It is not only the start of the Grand Line, but also the end of the Grand Line, for that the other end of it is the end of the New World. In this arc, the Straw Hats encounter Vivi though her real identity as the princess of Alabasta is not revealed. They return Vivi and Mr.
9 to Whiskey Peak, which is the begin of the story.2-2. Whiskey Peak Arc (Anime Episodes 64-67, Manga Chapters 106-114)Whiskey Peak is a town that the residents welcome the pirates while in fact all of them are bounty hunters. In addition, they are members of Baroque Works, which is led by Crocodile, a Shichibukai. What’s more, Nico Robin is introduced as Miss All Sunday, who would later join the Straw Hat Pirates after the events of the Alabasta arc. Because of Luffy’s misunderstanding, he has a battle with Zoro. It would be interesting to talk about whom would be stronger, Luffy or Zoro? As Miss Wednesday(Vivi) is disclosed as a spy, she was chased by Baroque Works.
The Straw Hats agree to return her to her country.2-3. Coby and Helmeppo Arc (Anime Episodes 68-69, Manga Chapters covers 83-119)This arc is based on title pages of each One Piece chapter, telling the struggling story of Coby and Helmeppo. It contains only two episodes, but believe me it is really very interesting. They two train under Vice Admiral Garp’s supervision and became stronger and stronger. Now Coby has become a Marine Captain and Helmeppo has become a Lieutenant Commander.2-4. Little Garden Arc (Anime Episodes 70-77, Manga Chapters 115-129)Though Miss All Sunday(Nico Robin) gives Vivi an Eternal Pose to Alabasta, Luffy breaks it so that the Straw Hat Pirates have to travel through Little Garden. Little Garden is a prehistoric island which is unpopulated except for dinosaurs and two giants named Dorry and Brogy.
The two giants have battled with each other day by day while Dorry is injured by an explosion done by Mr. The Straw Hats defeat four of the Baroque Works officers. At last, Sanji gets an Eternal Pose to Alabasta from the Baroque Works members.2-5. Drum Island Arc (Anime Episodes 78-91, Manga Chapters 130-154)Soon after the Straw Hats left Little Garden, Nami gets sick and they have to find medical treatment for her.
They encounter Drum Island which is a winter island that snows year-round. Drum Island is called the Island of Doctors, but there’s only one doctor, Dr. Luffy and Sanji with Nami head for the mountain where Dr.
Kureha lives. It is a hard way to go to the castle on the mountain. Sanji is injured, so Luffy has to carry both Nami and Sanji. In the castle, they get medical treatment and encounter Tony Tony Chopper, Dr.
Kureha’s assistant. Chopper aspires to travel to the sea and joins the Straw Hats at last.2-6. Alabasta Arc (Anime Episodes 92-130, Manga Chapters 130-154)The Straw Hats finally reach the desert kingdom of Alabasta. There happens a civil war between the kingdom’s army and the rebels. The perpetrator is Crocodile, one of the Schichibukai, who attempts to take forcible possession of the country.
Luffy is angry for what Crocodile has done and swears that he will take down him. The Straw Hats along with Vivi try to stop the war. While a massive war breaks out between kingdom’s army and the rebels. They clash with the Baroque Works officers and finally defeat them. After Luffy defeated Crocodile, Crocodile was arrested by the Marines which were led by Smoker and Tashigi. What’s more, Crocodile’s epithet as Schichibukai was deprived. After Alabasta event, Nico Robin joins the Straw Hats Pirates.2-7.
Post-Alabasta Arc (Anime Episodes 131-135, Non-Canon)This arc is a filler arc and not based on manga. It mainly tells the histories and goals of the Straw Hat Pirates crew. If your time is limit, there is no need for you to watch these episodes. Sky Island Saga3-1. Goat Island Arc (Anime Episodes 136-138)This part is Non-Canon therefore not based on One Piece manga. Nonetheless, this arc is very interesting. It tells a story between the Straw Hats and an old man named Zenny living with a multitude of goats on an island.
This old man was a debt collector 20 years ago. The Straw Hats think that he would die in 3 days so that they treat him well. It happens a lot of interesting things between them. I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourselves when watching this arc.3-2. Ruluka Island Arc (Anime Episodes 139-143)This arc is also Non-Canon.
In my mind it is a little boring and I won’t recommend you to watch this part.3-3. Jaya Arc (Anime Episodes 144-152, Manga Chapters 218-236)This arc begins with a big ship falling from the sky. Sky island is introduced by Robin, which has excited Luffy. In order to find the way to the sky island, the Straw Hats go to Jaya.
They ask people something about the sky island, while they are ridiculed. No one believes that there exists an island on the sky. One of them is Bellamy, the main antagonist in this arc.
Nonetheless, the Straw Hats are lucky to meet Cricket Noland, a descendant of Montblanc Noland. This man gives them the clue and help them get to the sky. What’s worth noting is that Blackbeard and his crew debut on Mock Town. Luffy has a row with Blackbeard.3-4.
Skypiea Arc (Anime Episodes 153-195, Manga Chapters 237-302)Under the help of Cricket Noland and the Saruyama Alliance, the Straw Hats ride the Knock-Up Stream to sail into the sky and reach Skypiea successfully. They are embroiled in a survival game.
Battles among the Straw Hats, the Shandia, Enel and his priests begin. Enel has devil fruit powers, a Rumble-Rumble Fruit, which allows him to transform into, create, and control lightning. Though it is a terrible ability, Luffy is immune to his lightning attacks. On the other hand, Robin has found that Skypiea is a part of Jaya and there exists a gold city on the Skypiea.
This arc is so interesting and popular among One Piece fans. It is worth time invested.3-5. G-8 Arc (Anime Episodes 196-206)G-8 Arc is Non-Canon so that it is not based on One Piece manga. As far as I am concerned, this filler arc is the most interesting filler arc. Instead of the open sea, the Straw Hats land in the middle of the marine base G-8, which is surrounded by mountains.
That being said, they infiltrate the marine base unintentionally. They have to abandon their ship and disguise themselves to find a way out of the base.
The commander of the marine base is Jonathan, an interesting man. The Straw Hats battle with Jonathan in both wits and courage and finally flee from the base through flying to the sky.
This part is really interesting and I strongly recommend that you watch it. Water 7 Saga4-1. Long Ring Long Land Arc (Anime Episodes 207-219, Manga Chapters 303-321)This arc is mostly canon but contains some fillers. This part mainly depicts a contest between the Straw Hat Pirates and the Foxy Pirates, called the “Davy Back Fight”.
In the Davy Back Fight, members of each pirate crew face off in different events in which the winner of the event can steal crew members of the losing team, even the captain. Foxy the Silver Fox, a cunning man eaten Slow-Slow Fruit, always uses his devil fruit power to slow down the Straw Hats. Chopper and Robin are taken by the Foxy Pirates, but the Straw Hats win them back. This part is funny. Believe me you will like it.4-2. Ocean’s Dream Arc (Anime Episodes 220-224, Non-Canon)This arc is Non-Canon therefore not based on manga.
The story is based on a One Piece video game named, Ocean’s Dream for the PlayStation. The Straw Hats except Robin lose their memories. So they go to find their memories.
If you are interested in this story, you can watch it.4-3. Foxy’s Return Arc (Anime Episodes 225-226, Non-Canon)This part is a filler arc.

It is worth watching.4-4. Long Ring Long Land Arc Cont. (Anime Episodes 227-228)This arc is the continuation of the Long Ring Long Land Arc. The Straw Hats encounter the Navy Headquarters’ Admiral Aokiji, the World Government’s ultimate powerhouse. The power of the marines is first disclosed in this arc. It has really amazed me that the ultimate powerhouse of the marines is so ferocious that an admiral could defeat the Straw Hats easily.4-5.
Water Seven Arc (Anime Episodes 229-263, Manga Chapters 322-374)In order to find a shipwright, the Straw Hats reach Water Seven. The shipbuilding technology there is high level in the world. They clash with the Franky Family because that Usopp is robbed and injured heavily by them. When told that their ship could not be fixed anymore, all the crews get shocked. Nonetheless, the Straw Hats, except Usopp, agree to buy a new ship. Usopp insists that they should not abandon Going Merry, as a result, he has a duel with Luffy.
Luffy defeats Ussop and leaves him Going Merry. Meanwhile, CP9 make their debut and threaten Robin to go with them. After learning the real reason that Robin goes with CP9, the Straw Hats decide to rescue her.4-6. Enies Lobby Arc (Anime Episodes 264-312, Manga Chapters 375-430)Enies Lobby, also known as the Judicial Island, has a courthouse which makes it easy to transfer high-level criminals into Impel Down. Robin would be the one being transferred to Impel Down. The Straw Hats along with the Franky Family go to Enies Lobby to rescue Robin and Franky. Their antagonists are 10,000 government agents and marines, what’s more, the CP9.
Despite confronting the World Government, they do not hesitate to fight the CP9 to rescue Robin. This part is really moving.
After his arc, Luffy’s bounty has increased to 300 million berries and Zoro 120 million berries.4-7. Post-Enies Lobby Arc (Anime Episodes 313-325, Manga Chapters 431-441)After escaping from Enies Lobby, the Straw Hats return to Water Seven. Franky tells them that he will build a ship for them. Meanwhile, the Navy Headquarters’ Vice Admiral, visits them.
The fact that Garp is Luffy’s grandfather makes everyone shocked. What’s more, Luffy’s father is disclosed.
That’s Monkey D. This makes all the Straw Hats and the marines shocked. No one knows Dragon’s full name, not saying that he has a son. Several days later, their ship, named Thousand Sunny, is completed. Franky joins the Straw Hats as a shipwright. What’s worth noting is that in Episode 325, Ace clashes with Blackbeard, which causes the later.
